(La Junta, CO) -- Otero county commissioners officially joined other counties in Colorado Monday when they put pen to paper on a resolution against Initiative 16, Amy White Tanabe with the county says after reading it she feels many folks in the Centennial state don’t understand the process in growing and raising our food. Initiative 16 is in the petition gathering phase right now in the state. Should it make it to the ballot with enough signatures, it would make certain things done on a ranch, a felony such as pregnancy checking in cattle. It would also make spaying and neutering pets illegal. And the initiative states that an animal must live out one fourth of its natural life before slaughter. Farmers and ranchers feel it will devastate their way of life.
(Las Animas, CO) -- Las Animas School District's upcoming Santa Fe Trail Days has been cancelled due to increasing cases of Covid-19. Superintendent Elsie Goines says the student led activities like the King and Queen contest, the Ranch Burger lunch, and square dancing will not happen in person this year. Other activities planned for the downtown area were also cancelled such as the street vendors and booths and dance. The Bent County Art Guild, however, decided to keep the art show and hope they'll have a great turnout for the show which starts Tuesday April 27th and runs through May 8th.
