Inmate Death in the Bent County Jail
(Las Animas, CO) -- Investigations continue into the death of an inmate at the Bent County jail. According to a news release from the Otero County Sheriff, Shawn Mobley, 43 year old Danny Higbee was found dead from an apparent suicide. Both Otero and Bent are investigating the death as well as the Bent County Coroner. The news release states that Bent County deputies had just checked in on Higbee a few minutes before the death occurred. Deputies in the jail and the Bent County Ambulance Service tried to save his life. An autopsy will reveal more information and is being done to confirm how Higbee died. The Bent County jail is the largest county jail in Southeast Colorado with available bed space and often holds inmates for neighboring counties such as Otero. A check of their website shows, as of last night at 5p-m there were 54 inmates total in the jail.
